What is Throat Cancer?

It is believed that throat cancer arises when DNA damage creates abnormal cells. These abnormal cells then multiply uncontrollably and develop into a throat tumor. These tumors can reside anywhere within and around the throat region including the voice box, vocal cords, and even behind the mouth and/or nose. Like other types of cancer, early detection is critical to successful treatment.

What are Causes of Throat Cancer?

Like other types of cancer, doctors have not yet determined definitive causes for throat cancer. However, smoking, chewing tobacco, dangerous chemical exposure and excessive alcohol consumption have been shown to increase one’s risk of throat cancer.

What are the Signs of Throat Cancer?

Symptoms can include: coughing, swallowing difficulties, sore throat, hoarseness in voice, and even ear pain.

What Tests are Performed for Throat Cancer?

Testing often entails endoscopy, a procedure in which a tiny camera is lowered into the throat. If an irregularity is uncovered, a sample will be removed for analysis.

How is Throat Cancer Diagnosed?

Diagnosis of cancer involves analysis of the tissue sample.  If cancerous cells are identified, the doctor determines the stage of cancer  The stage helps to determine which treatment plans to investigate and potentially pursue.

What Throat Cancer Treatments are Available?

Treatment options include surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.  Often Doctors recommend and pursue multiple types of treatments at once.

Is there Hope for the Future?

The diagnosis of throat cancer is usually overwhelming, but remember that you are not alone and that new treatment options are constantly being explored and brought to market.   Keep the faith as the future does show promise.
